WHITING DAVIS baby mesh purse in gray, blue, rose, blue and green, 4" by 6-1/2".the gold tone frame is stylized flowers and scrolls in a Deco style, circa 1930. Wonderful color illustrations of these mesh bags can be seen in the 1932 Denver Jeweler's Buying Guide. Both the rough and powder wells maintain the original make-up and puff applicators, as shown. The rough is still partially covered with some of the original foil. The center arena has a raised oval disc that is decorated in black enamel, depicting a colonial couple in period clothing. The silver plate is in very fine condition with only the very slightest rub in the very center, as shown, in person, you can barely see it.Enamel colors are strong with minimal or minute loss, I really don't see anything much at all to mention.
The black and white enameled design is a classic from the Deco era when Whiting & Davis produced several high-end quality compact mesh purses, for which they have become well known for and have led the industry for many decades.
She soon decided to show part of the collection to the public.
While mesh bags were hand made in the 1800's, the invention of the mesh making machine in 1909 made them more readily available and they were even more popular in the Roaring 20's.
There are many types of mesh, some of which are ring mesh, Dresden mesh, baby mesh, fish scale mesh, and enameled mesh.
